How do I Know if I Have Gum Disease?

Did you know?

Periodontal disease is the top reasons that contribute to tooth loss after the age of 30. Unfortunately, most jaw and gum disease may be painless, and therefore hard for people to detect. The gum disease may then develop into periodontal disease, under your very own nose!

Gum disease can occur at any age, but it is most common among adults. If detected in its early stages, gum disease can be reversed so see your dentist if you notice any of the following symptoms:

Healthy gums should be pink, firm and keep your teeth securely in place. Your gums should not bleed when you touch or brush them.

Gum disease is not always painful and you may be unaware you have it. This is why it is important to have regular dental check-ups.

Signs of gum disease:

  • Gums that are red, puffy or swollen, or tender
  • Gums that bleed during brushing or flossing
  • Teeth that look longer because your gums have receded
  • Gums that have separated, or pulled away, from your teeth, creating a pocket
  • Changes in the way your teeth fit together when you bite
  • Pus coming from between your teeth and gums
  • Constant bad breath or a bad taste in your mouth
  • Changes in the way teeth fit together upon biting down, or in the fit of partial dentures
